The ripe, golden month of October just flew by, and the breath of winter is slowly coming. As the weather is starting to cool down and the leaves are changing to a beautiful red and yellow hue, it’s time to bring out my favorite drink. No, not the pumpkin spiced latte, but hot chocolate!

Of course, most of us use instant hot chocolate but that doesn’t quite get that richest, creamiest hot chocolate that you want and need to warm up your soul. For a really great cup, it may seem like a hassle to get all the necessary ingredients and make it. Fortunately, our friends at America’s Test Kitchen have found a compromise that takes the best from both worlds: an instant mix made with real chocolate.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 bag (12 ounces) of semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients into a large bowl and microwave for 2-3 minutes. You may have to stir the mixture and continue microwaving. Eventually, you’ll want a smooth mixture. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge or until the mixture is firm. Then scoop 3tbsp of the chilled mixture into 2 inch balls. Wrap each ball in plastic wrap and place in freezer or fridge. (mixture will last 5 days in fridge and 2 months in freezer)

To make a cup of instant hot chocolate, simply unwrap one ball and put it in a cup of milk. Microwave for around 2 minutes and stir to ensure smoothness of texture.
