The cooking cowboy that everybody loves, Kent Rollins, showed how he makes some old-fashioned biscuits and tops them with delicious gravy.

This pairing never fails when it comes to comfort food. Prepare the ingredients, and let’s get cooking.

Old-Fashioned Biscuits Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 3/4 cup chilled butter thinly sliced
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lightly butter a 12-inch iron skillet, baking pan, or dutch oven. Set it aside.

Combine the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Slice the butter into the pan, and use a pastry cutter or fork to mash it on the dry ingredients. You would want to leave the butter in chunks so it would give that creamy, buttery goodness when you back them.

In a small bowl, mix the egg and the buttermilk.

If you don’t have buttermilk in your pantry, mix a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar per cup of milk. Pour the mixture into the large bowl, and stir until it turns sticky.

You can sprinkle more flour if you find the dough too sticky.

Continue doing that until you find the perfect consistency for your dough.

Sprinkle a bit of flour on a flat surface or a chopping board and turn the dough and knead for a minute or about 10-15 times until it becomes a soft dough.

Pat or roll the dough to about an inch thick.

Cut the dough using a biscuit cutter and place them inside the baking pan or skillet. If you still have enough dough for more biscuits, just fold the excess and cut some more.

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until it is light golden brown on both sides.

Brush the top part with melted butter, and serve. But wait! Want to make these biscuits tastier? Make this gravy to go with it.

Sausage Gravy Ingredients:

1/2 cup bacon grease or any meat grease
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 to 2 cups milk, warmed
1/2 lb. ground pork or breakfast sausage, cooked
Salt and black pepper to taste

Cook some ground pork or chopped breakfast sausage.

Once cooked, remove the meat but leave the grease on the skillet or pan. Continue to cook over medium heat.

Once the pan is hot enough, sift the flour and stir. Gradually add the flour to the pan, continue stirring until it boils, and do so for two minutes.

Gradually add the milk, still constantly stirring.

Bring it to a light boil. Add milk, stir, and light boil again.

Do this until the mixture is smooth and thick or on your desired consistency. You can add more milk if you want a thinner gravy.

Add in your sausage or ground pork and mix.
