Chef Gordon Ramsay actually aspired to become a professional footballer, but an injury sidelined his dreams. The UK chef returned to college to study hotel management where he ended up training with some of the world’s leading chefs.
That’s when he learned that he was fantastic in the kitchen. In just three years of running Aubergine in London as head chef, the restaurant was awarded two Michelin stars. The ambitious chef then branched out on his own and started his first restaurant at the age of 35, an entrepreneurial endeavor that earned three Michelin stars.

Since then, Chef Ramsay has accumulated numerous stars, started a string of successful restaurants and hosts his own cooking shows. His books are bestsellers and his recipes are so mouthwatering people cannot get enough.
Chef Ramsay isn’t known for just one type of cooking style, but is versatile in the kitchen. He’s even created a series of “fit food” recipes inspired by his Ultimate Fit Food recipe book that focuses on healthy and nutritious dishes.
One eye-opening recipe he’s shared has people realizing they’ve been preparing and cooking their steak all wrong.
“Don’t forget to cook a steak around the big night. If you follow these simple rules, it’s going to be easy. Let the pan get nice and hot. If there’s no heat inside the pan, there’s no color. If there’s no color, there’s no flavor.”
Chef Ramsay wants the steak relaxed, or at room temperature. He explained that a relaxed steak will cook faster and won’t be chilly in the center.
Ingredients
New York Steak (or your preferred cut)
Salt
Freshly cracked pepper
Butter
Neutral oil (flavorless olive oil)
Infiltrate the seasoning
Use a generous amount of salt and pepper to season the steak. Use your fingers to gently press the salt and pepper into the steak.
Smoke the steak
Use a whopping pan in order to smoke steak. Cast iron pans perform most optimally for this particular meal. Make sure the pan is nice and hot, then add the oil.
Wait to add the steak until the oil has heated up, just before it smokes, the chef explains. Then add the steak and push it down inside the center with your fingers.
Don’t move the meat
Chef Ramsay advises people to only flip the steak once while cooking. Moving it around drains it of essential juices. For a rare steak, cook two to three minutes on one side, then flip. After cooking the steak for approximately 1.5 minutes on the second side, melt the butter into the pan.
Spoon the butter all across the entire steak. Just before it’s finished cooking, return it fat side down. Cook for another 30 seconds then remove it from the pan and baste again with the butter in the pan.
Is it ready?
Test the steak’s doneness by comparing the firmness of the steak to regions of the hand. Rare is on the thumb muscle near your palm, Chef Ramsay said, and medium is close to the outer side of the thumb. Well-done can be gauged where the wrist meets the hand.
Chef Ramsay has other amazing recipes on his website using different types of meats, as well as vegetarian options. Once you’ve mastered cooking a steak Chef Ramsay’s way, try his recipe for bavette steak with rosemary chimichurri.
