The most important part of the recipe is finding a watermelon big enough to hold a whole chicken.

Giving her viewers some tips, she said that this recipe is best during the late summer because it’s when you can easily find large watermelons.

Once you have your main ingredients ready then you should be good to go.

1. Cut the watermelon in half.

Don’t cut it into two equal parts, make sure that the bottom part is bigger because it’s where you will put your chicken.

Note: Partially slice the bottom part of the watermelon so that it lies nice and flat on the surface.

2. Scoop out the insides of the bottom half of the watermelon.

There should be enough space to nestle the chicken in there.

3. Season the chicken.

Put in some salt, pepper, lemons (1 pricked, 1 cut in half), soy sauce (inside and outside), five-spice powder.

Five Spice Powder is a blend of cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, and Szechwan peppercorns. Some recipes also contain ginger, nutmeg, and licorice.

4. Get everything ready to be cooked.

Once the chicken is completely seasoned, stuff it inside the scooped watermelon basin and place the other half on top as a lid.

After that, punch in some long skewers to secure it.

5. Cook it for a total of 5 hours

The entire thing goes on a baking sheet and into the oven.

She also described the smell of her house while she was cooking it.

“I have to say while this was cooking, my whole house smelled a bit of pumpkin and as the five-spice came out, it smelled like I was baking something sweet.”

The watermelon looks nothing like a watermelon!

As she presented the outcome of the dish, she said, “After 5 hours of cooking, this is what you get!”

Then, she followed it up with a hearty giggle.

The chicken turned out to be fall-apart tender. She also used the mixed juice of the watermelon and chicken and turned it into a gravy.

So how did it taste?

She reiterated how tender and juicy the chicken meat was and how the five-spice made a perfect seasoning for it.

Also, it didn’t taste like a watermelon at all.

The sweet gravy was well-balanced by the tangy flavor of the lemon.
