When it comes to desserts, few are as iconic in America as an old-fashioned apple pie. Something about this dessert takes us back to childhood and reminds us of our country’s heritage. Still, apple pie isn’t the only desert option there is out there. Even if we like its flavor profile, there’s still room to put a nice twist on the apple flavor when it comes to dessert recipes. Even if you don’t want to make a pie necessarily, today’s recipe is sure to tickle your fancy.
That’s right, today we’re making a cinnamon apple cake in lieu of your standard pie recipe. Although this dish uses many of the same flavors you’re probably used to, it wraps it all together in a different package and adds a few extra ingredients for further crunch and texture. As always, this recipe is super straightforward to make and is sure to taste absolutely delicious. So let’s get started, shall we?
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 peeled and chopped apple
- 1 cup of vegetable oil
- 1 cup of dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup of granulated white sugar
- 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
Here’s what you do:
1. Before anything else, make sure you preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease up a nine-inch round cake pan as well. Once that’s done, pull out a medium mixing bowl and add your eggs and oil to it, whisking them up with a fork.
2. Once the wet ingredients are mixed, add in your cinnamon, white sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract. Again, be sure to mix everything up well until it’s all evenly combined.
3. After that, gradually add your flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder as well. Keep mixing until everything is evenly combined. Once that’s done, fold in your apples and nuts as well.
4. With the batter ready, pour it all carefully into a pan. When the oven is preheated, pop it in for about 45 minutes. After that time has passed, pull it out and do the toothpick test to make sure it has cooked all the way through. If it looks good, set it aside to let it cool for 15 minutes. After that, you’re ready to eat!
As you can see, making this recipe is entirely simple—maybe even more so than making homemade pie is. But just like homemade pie, this dish is equally delicious and flavorful.
