Of all the desserts there are in the world, cookies are particularly special. You can put whatever you want into them, there’s always enough of them to share so you always have leftovers and they couldn’t be easier to make. Among the country’s favorites are chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies and snickerdoodles. Still, every now and then there comes a new recipe that makes all the other ones become old news. And we have one of those recipes for you today.

Today’s recipe is for sugared brown butter cookies that are unlike anything we’ve tasted before. Although standard sugar cookies definitely have a host of devoted fans, browning the butter adds a new layer of complexity and flavor that you’ll want to taste again and again. Just like most other recipes of its kind, these couldn’t be easier to make and are sure to be a hit with the whole family. So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 1/4 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of salted butter
  • 2/3 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder

Here’s what you do:

1. Before you get started, make sure to preheat your oven to 325 degrees. In the meantime, get out a baking sheet and line it with parchment paper. Set the sheet aside and get out a small saucepan, setting it over medium heat.

2. Add your butter to the saucepan and keep cooking it until the butter turns brown, stirring throughout the process. Once it looks ready, add your brown sugar, one tablespoon of white sugar and vanilla. Keep stirring everything until it all dissolves and take the mixture off the heat, letting it come back to room temperature.

3. Next, get out a larger mixing bowl and add your flour and baking powder. Gradually stir your melted sugar mixture into the dry ingredients as well and stir it all up so that it’s well-combined. If your dough is somewhat crumbly at this stage, that’s fine. Let the dough sit for about an hour so that it can absorb the butter before proceeding.

4. Next, put the rest of your white sugar in a little bowl. Meanwhile, work your dough into little one-inch balls and roll them in the sugar bowl before placing them on your cookie sheet. Leave each one about two inches apart from the others. If your dough still isn’t workable at this stage, try microwaving little portions of it in the microwave for 10 seconds to make it more malleable.

5. With everything ready, pop the sheet in the oven and let it cook for 15 minutes per tray. Take the cookies out when they’re golden brown and let them cool off on a wire rack and you’re ready to eat!
