Eating healthy is hard. Fruits and vegetables are an important part of your diet, but choosing them over delicious, greasy, sugary junk food is challenging.
In fact, if you’ve ever been on a diet, you may have wished that fruits and veggies could taste like unhealthy snacks.
That means this news is going to drastically improve your mood.
Blue Java bananas are a banana like you’ve never eaten before. Rumor has it that these unique, blue-skinned fruits have flesh that looks more or less like a regular banana …. But tastes like vanilla ice cream.
If there was ever a good way to get your potassium, this is it.
These delicious blue bananas come from Southeast Asia where they made their way to Australia. In Hawaii, they’re known as ice cream bananas, just in case you needed further proof that they’re delicious.
Unfortunately, you’d probably have a hard time finding them outside a few select parts of the world. But don’t worry, foodies everywhere have tasted them so you know exactly what the experience is like — even if you might not have it yourself quite yet.
Food vlogger Grant Campbell decided to try the bananas for posterity.
He was initially discouraged by the odd, mushy look of the bananas.
“That looks terrible, right?” he said, holding up the smushed fruit in its odd blue skin. But his tune changed when he started to eat. “Party in my mouth. So good — unbelievable. You’ve got to wait until these suckers are so soft that you’re ready to throw them away and then eat them — that’s the time to eat them.”
He’s not the only food vlogger who has given the Blue Javas an enthusiastic review.
YouTuber LadyFlora loved the ice cream bananas so much that she decided to order seeds and plant a tree in her own garden.
“The texture is much better [than a regular banana] and it’s sweeter too,” she said. “This is a really good banana.”
LadyFlora described the Blue Java as mild and “very creamy”.
If you want to get your hands on the ice cream banana, there’s good news: you can grow a tree yourself. Online sellers on Amazon and elsewhere sell the seeds.
The banana tree is a bit finicky in its needs, though. If you live in the right climate and are willing to provide the conditions the tree needs, however, you may be on your way to eating the best bananas you’ll ever taste.
There’s a caveat, though: Blue Java banana trees need very warm, moist climates.
If you live in the Deep South, such as Florida, you may have a shot at cultivating one of these trees. Of course, you’ll need to make sure you have room for a tree that can grow up to 20 feet.
They also need regular pruning, watering, and fertilization so they can get the perfect combination of dampness and heat. Just ask yourself: how much work are you willing to put in for a really, REALLY good banana?
