Bloomin’ onion is a popular and tasty appetizer that’s an instant crowd pleaser. After all, who doesn’t love fried, salty chunks of onions that just melt in your mouth? Rather than buy the appetizer at restaurants, it turns out, you can enjoy them in the comfort of your own home. They are rather simple and easy to make!

This recipe has two parts. The first is the dipping sauce, and the second part is the actual blooming onion.

You will need the following ingredients for the dipping sauce:

  • 1/3 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tbsps. cream-style horseradish sauce
  • 1/3 tsp. paprika
  • 1 tbsp. ketchup
  • ½ cup mayonnaise

For the blooming onion, here’s what you need:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • 1-1/2 tsps. Salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose floor
  • 1-1/2 tsps. Cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • ½ tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/3 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/8 tsp. ground thyme
  • 1/8 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 large sweet onion

To make the sauce, mix the horseradish sauce, paprika, mayonnaise, ketchup, oregano, salt, ground black pepper, and cayenne pepper. After that, keep it covered in the fridge until needed.

Next, let’s make the liquid batter. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and milk together.

For the dry batter, combine salt, flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, oregano, ground black pepper, cumin, and thyme in another bowl. Mix well.

Now, we’ll prepare the onion. Slice at least an inch off the top and the bottom of the onion. Make sure you remove the papery skin properly.

Using a thin knife, slice the onion to create petals, but be careful not to slice through the bottom up to the way down. That will keep the petals intact.

Then, spread the petals to create a blooming effect. To ease the separation process, blanch onion into boiling water for one minute and quickly put it into cold water to prevent overcooking.

Dip the onion into the liquid mixture and coat it evenly with the dry mixtures. Do this twice to be sure it is well-coated.

Heat oil in a deep fryer and make sure there is enough oil to cover the onion as it fries.

Finally, fry the onion in the oil until it turns brown. Once the color is achieved, remove it from the pan and let it drain on paper towels.
