Whenever we throw a party, we have to make sure that the food element is up to our standards. With spring here, we can expect to throw more backyard cookouts and get-togethers—and we have to make sure we come prepared for those parties. When it comes to making delicious and savory appetizers and hors-d’oeuvres, it’s pretty hard to beat slow cooker recipes. And today we have one of the best ones we’ve come across.

When we’re in the store, we don’t usually pick up cocktail wieners if we’re just shopping for ourselves. Still, they can be a very delicious finger food under the right circumstances—and this slow cooker recipe for bacon-wrapped smokies is definitely one of them. This is one of the most delicious things we’ve had in a long time and it couldn’t be easier to make. Let’s get started.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 pound of bacon cut into thirds
  • 1 14-ounce package of cocktail wieners
  • 3/4 cup of brown sugar (though you can adjust this to your own tastes)
  • wooden toothpicks

Here’s what you do:

1. First, prepare each one of your smokies by getting a cocktail wiener and wrapping it carefully in a third of a strip of bacon. Once everything is in place, simply pierce it with a toothpick and set it aside. Repeat this process until you’ve used up all of the meat.

2. Start putting all your bacon-wrapped wieners into the slow cooker, sprinkling them with brown sugar until all of the ingredients are in the slow cooker. If you have any extra bacon or wieners you can throw those in on their own as well.

3. Once it’s all combined, cover the ingredients and let it all cook on high for three hours, stirring the mixture up occasionally to make sure they’re evenly coated. Once it’s all done, you can move the pot out of the cooker and set it out on a table for people to eat from!

As you can see, there’s almost nothing to this recipe but it ends up producing one of the most delicious appetizers imaginable. Although the combination of the bacon and the wieners is delicious enough on its own, the caramelized brown sugar really takes everything to the next level.

After you’ve tried this recipe a few times, there are a few things you can do to tweak how it comes out as well. Because the slow cooker can only get the bacon on the outside to a certain level of crispiness, you can preheat your oven and pop all the cocktail wieners in there on broil for a few minutes at the end to crisp everything up a little bit. Don’t do it for too long, though, or you might dry things out too much. Finally, be sure to serve these little guys with a range of dipping sauces for your party guests. We recommend spicy mustard, barbecue sauce and ketchup. Enjoy!
