In any dance competition, all the competitors prepare for their routine. They have everything well-choreographed, prepared their costumes, and picked the best song that would best match their dance.
However, sometimes, DJs have this clever way of spicing things up and adding challenges to the competitors. Just like this swing dance duo who had no idea what song the DJs had picked for them during a competition.
But when they heard a familiar track playing, they squeezed every drop of their talent out on the dance floor!
A video of their swing dance performance was just recently uploaded online and it will surely flip anyone back to their childhood days.
They are Laszlo Tarkanyi and Stefanie Tschom.
Laszlo is a West Coast Swing instructor from Budapest, Hungary, while Stefanie is from Austria. They were both participants in the recently concluded 2019-2020 Swing competition which was held in Vienna.
The picking system was random, and when the host called in their names, nobody thought that things were about to get “wild.”
When the host asked them how they were feeling, Laszlo might have mistakenly said the word “adventurous.”
The word gave the host an idea of what kind of music the DJ should play for the couple. And on a level of 1-10 of adventurous, he asked for a 10! Then he jokingly said, “I’m just gonna say, we’ll pray for you.”
As queued by the host, the DJ came up with an “evil” plan for Laszlo and Stefanie.
The music started slow and quiet, the couple was still trying to shake things off, the song was still everyone’s guess, except the DJs of course.
They beautifully spun in the first few seconds of the song’s intro. Were they ready for what’s headed their way? Let’s all find out!
When the lyrics came in, the first few lines made them realize that it’s “The Bare Necessities” from Disney’s The Jungle Book!
The venue was then immediately filled with laughter, even Laszlo and Stefanie struggled to hold back. But being professionals, they knew that they needed to focus and do what they’re supposed to do.
They put their game faces and switched their competitive side ON!
Laszlo and Stefanie were obviously surprised by the song, but that didn’t stop them in flaunting their high-faluting West Coast Swing dance skills.
They showed everyone what chemistry was all about.
They filled their routine with elegant-looking slides, glides, spins, and turns. They were doing each sequence with so much precision, though they didn’t forget mixing it with some jolly moves to match it with the children’s song.
Talk about flawless!
The song came in as a surprise, but we still don’t know if their routine was what they’ve prepared or not.
It can’t be denied, they still managed to nail it, right? Everything was so flawless and smooth that they almost looked like gliding on melting butter.
We may have seen tons of swing dances, but have you seen one that’s mixed with a kids’ song?
The tune and the lyrics of the song are both playful, and it’s also a must that it reflects on whoever dances to its lively music. After all, it’s a tune that many of us grew up with.
Who can possibly forget when Baloo danced in the movie and sang the lyrics:
“Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife”
According to Songfacts, the song was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
It looks like “adventurous” was the right word to describe this couple.
The duo was obviously unfazed by the challenge because they ended up amazing. And what did that give them? A standing ovation from the crowd and the first-place prize in the Strictly Open final!
