Even if you’ve ever eaten French food, you’re probably familiar with the tastes and palette of this classic cuisine. For those who are really lucky, you may have even been to France in person and eaten the food there firsthand! In any case, you’ve probably heard of au gratin potatoes before. If you haven’t, they are a cheesy and delicious dish of scalloped potatoes which packs a lot of flavor.

Although we typically bake potatoes au gratin in the oven, you can always use your slow cooker for the same results and less hassle—and you only need a few simple ingredients.

Here’s what you need:

  • 5 medium potatoes
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 3 tablespoons of white flour
  • 1 clove of peeled and minced garlic
  • 1 onion, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • chives (as much as you like)

Here’s what you do:

1. Before anything else, wash and peel your potatoes. Once they’re ready to go, slice them into thin, round slices about a half a centimeter thick.

2. Once they’re all cut up, line the bottom of your crockpot with one layer of your potato slices and add salt and pepper. After that, throw on another layer and add in more salt and pepper. Keep doing this until you’ve filled the pot or you run out of potatoes!

3. Next, melt your butter in a pot over medium heat. Once it’s melted, add in your flour and stir together so that the mixture gets thick and doughy. After that, add in your sliced onions and minced garlic. Keep whisking it all together and start to add your milk as well.

4. Next, add in your shredded cheese and keep whisking until the mixture becomes thick and smooth. After that, throw your cheese sauce in the pot and make sure it all soaks in evenly—to do this, you may need to tip the pot around. Once everything is incorporated, set your slow cooker on high for about three hours and let it set.

5. After the three hours are up, be sure to check on the potatoes every 15 to 30 minutes until you can easily poke through the potatoes with a fork. Once the potatoes are soft enough, you’re done! Serve chives on top and you’re ready to eat!

As you can see, making your own potatoes au gratin dish may be easier than you thought. As you make this recipe, be sure not to overcook your potatoes underneath the top layer so that the entire thing has the right texture. And as always, feel free to add your own ingredients as you see fit!
