If you live anywhere in the midwest, you’re probably at least somewhat familiar with the local Amish population. For anyone who doesn’t know, the Amish are a fundamentalist religious group known for avoiding modern technology and sticking to old traditions. Still, these communities are known to trade their old-fashioned crafts with members of modern society. Many of us probably have come across Amish quilts or Amish carpentry, both known for their fine craftsmanship and technical detail.
As it turns out, the Amish also has a number of delicious recipes that have gradually spread to our society as well (and not just dessert cookies, either). The recipe we’re making today is a pasta casserole that comes right out of classical Amish cuisine. This dish is very easy to put together and results in a delicious and rib-sticking meal that you’re sure to make again and again. So what are we waiting for? Let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 pound of ground beef
- 12 ounces of egg noodles
- 1 can of tomato soup
- 1 can of cream of mushroom soup
- 3 cloves of minced garlic
- 1/2 of a yellow onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup of half-and-half
- 1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese
- 1/2 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
- salt
- pepper
Here’s what you do:
1. Before starting your recipe, make sure your oven is preheating to 350 degrees. In the meantime, get a large pot full of salted water and bring it to a boil. Pour in your pasta noodles and cook them according to the package, preferably until they’re al dente. Strain the noodles when they’re done and set them aside.
2. Once that’s done, throw your beef in a large pan or skillet over medium-high heat and let it cook for 10 to 12 minutes. Keep cooking until it is well-browned all over. When it’s cooked, drain the fat out and add in your chopped onion and garlic. Keep cooking it for about five to six minutes until it all turns soft and fragrant. Add a generous amount of salt and pepper as well!
3. In another side bowl, stir together your cans of tomato and mushroom soup with your half-and-half and Worcestershire sauce. Mix that together and season it with your red pepper flakes and additional salt and pepper as needed.
4. Next, stir together your cooked noodles with your wet sauce ingredients and make sure it’s all evenly combined. When you’re ready, pour it in a baking dish. Sprinkle parmesan on top of the casserole and let it cook in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
5. When the time’s up, check to make sure the cheese is bubbly and everything has melted and cooked through. If it looks good, take it out of the oven and let it cool for five minutes before eating!
As you can see, this recipe is incredibly simple to put together and involves very little work. Once your noodles and meat are done cooking, throwing everything together in a baking dish will result in a hearty and delicious meal that the entire family is sure to love. While we’ve explained the basic Amish version, feel free to experiment with this as well! Happy cooking!
