Once you’ve gotten comfortable with your cooking in the kitchen, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to start to accessorize. You might start by buying a blender or a food processor. From there, you might expand to a nicer set of knives, an electric skillet, who knows! One kitchen gadget that many of us probably have but don’t use very often is the waffle iron.
If you’re like me, you have one of these shoved in a drawer—after all, if you’re not making waffles with it, you’re not using it, right? As it turns out, there are actually a ton of ways to use your waffle iron even if you’re not making standard breakfast waffles (though we should all be making more of those as well, I might add). After reading this list, you may want to pull that waffle iron out again.
With no further ado, here are eight great uses for your waffle iron.
1. Cinnamon Roll Waffles
This is still basically a waffle (as all of these are) but with a sweet twist! Have you seen those pre-made tubes of cinnamon rolls at the store? If you’ve ever bought one, you know that they’re supposed to be laid out on a baking sheet and thrown in the oven. Instead of doing that, just break a few rolls off and throw them in your waffle maker. In no time at all, you’ll have a gooey and crispy cinnamon waffle you can drizzle icing on!
2. Waffle Pizza
Similarly, you can buy some pre-made pizza dough and cook it in the waffle iron as well! After it gets partly done, open the oven and add some sauce and cheese and close it up again. At the end of it all, throw some more dough on top and press it again. Let it cool for a little longer and after it’s done, you have a hybrid waffle calzone creation!
3. Tater Tot Waffle
You knew this one was coming—after all, a potato pancake is already a thing! Anyway, all you need for this one is a bag of frozen tater tots, though you may need to let them thaw out a little bit before using them. Line your waffle maker with these and press down for a potato-packed breakfast meal!
4. Hash Brown Cheese Waffle
Although you can prepare your own hash brown mixture by shredding up some potatoes, you can also just buy a frozen bag of shredded potatoes and use that instead. Once you’ve got the ingredients, throw them on your waffle iron with some shredded cheese of your choosing and cook until it’s done.
5. Brownie Waffle
Just like the above, all you’ll need to do is buy a pre-made box of brownie mix and follow the steps up to where it would have you bake it in the oven. Once your mix is prepared, throw it in the iron like before and let it cook. In no time at all, you’ll have a delicious brownie waffle… though this one might be better eaten after dinner.
6. Cookie Waffle
Personally speaking, cookie dough should almost always be homemade if it’s worth the effort. Still, those who disagree can buy a pre-made roll as necessary. Just like the above, throw the dough in the waffle iron and flip it over. In no time at all, you’ll have a spongy, chocolatey cookie ready to dip in a tall glass of milk.
7. Waffle Omelette
Yes, as a matter of fact you can use your waffle iron to cook eggs! First, get a mixing bowl and beat your eggs in it with whatever ingredients you want—we recommend at least some cheese in there. As with all the other recipes, throw your egg mix in the iron and flip it over. Wait for a few minutes and out will come a waffle omelette!
8. Grilled Cheese Waffle Sandwich
How you do this one is up to you—but consider that you can basically use your waffle just like you would a panini press. Just throw in a slice of buttered bread with some cheese on top, along with whatever else you want in your sandwich. Put your other slice of buttered bread on top of that, press and voila—a quick and easy grilled cheese sandwich.
