Self-quarantining for long periods of time can make anybody feel a little blue. However, many people are using this time at home to learn a new skill or attempt to create something new. Some incredible DIY and craft projects have emerged from this period. But that’s not why we’re here.
People also found themselves baking to break the tedium of being cooped up at home. Needless to say, baking is a skill that takes a lot of time and practice, and some of the results leave… well… a lot to be desired.
We found 50 of the most hilarious baking fails on the internet, so get ready and try not to cry with laughter.
The Ugliest Birthday ‘Piecake’
Apparently, this is supposed to be a pie crust with banana filling inside. What nobody can get over is how ugly it looks. There, there, OP. It’s the thought that counts, right?
What do you get when it’s a scorcher outside and you decide to make a meringue-based cake? You get this monstrosity -a liquid pavlova landslide! At least its creator hadn’t decorated the top yet.
What Were They Supposed to be?
This baker just had one question: “what did we do wrong?” Well, we also have a question: what was this melted brown mess supposed to be? Jokes aside though, these “cookies” definitely needed more flour.
Honestly, this one isn’t half as bad as some of the other baking fails on this list, although I shudder to think what the inside of the OP’s microwave looks like. The fail here is easy to spot: try using half of the cake batter next time, OP!
This is the runner-up for the cake that perfectly sums up the awful year that was 2020. It looks like its creator gave up trying to pipe the dinosaur’s features halfway, and the sickly pink-colored icing has a purple tinge to it that makes the cake look like spoiled ham at first glance. Delicious.
This is meant to be a loaf of freshly-baked bread (yes, really). It’s so hideous that the creator has dubbed herself “champion of most-failed normal bread” on Twitter. Although it looks like feathers made their way into the dough somehow, she assures us that no birds were harmed to make it.
We’re not sure exactly what the baker did to destroy their bread maker while making a straightforward loaf of banana bread, but this is a complete disaster. At least the OP has a sense of humor.
A Twitter user posted these spectacular cookies to give Tweeps a giggle. The grimacing creatures were supposed to resemble bunnies, but they are so bad that someone said that he should blame his kids for their creation.
This hopeful baker obviously didn’t follow the instructions here. But thankfully, he had the foresight to place a baking sheet under the tray so that the banana bread mix didn’t ruin his oven. Good job!
Making a huge mess with mirror glaze is actually a very common baking fail – adding too much to the cake will create a sticky mess all over your counter. But the glaze looks a bit thin for the OP to get away with that excuse.
This cake fail is so hideous that the OP titled it “My Shame.” If he was going for a hellish, half-melted nightmare covered in frosting instead of a panda bear, he totally nailed it.
Pizza Lovers, Cover Your Eyes
This heap of dough happened when the baker tried to lift it off the pizza stone. What is depicted here is nothing short of pizza sacrilege. But, apparently, it still tasted good.
To be fair, making swiss rolls is
hard. Kudos to the OP for seeing the funny side. It’s really not
that bad for a first attempt.
These cookies look exactly like dirty ashtrays. Only, that’s not what their creator was going for at all – it was a very unhappy accident. The recipe called for salt and crushed mini pretzels on top, but the OP only had black salt and pretzel sticks. The result? Nauseating.
I had to do a double-take on these. No, it’s not fried chicken. What happened here is pretty obvious, but hilarious all the same. “I thought I was being clever by avoiding cleaning my oven & using the bake mode on my Ninja foodie. It outsmarted me,” the OP wrote. Sometimes, there are no shortcuts in life.
Paw-In Pumpkin Cheesecake
So this one has the internet divided. Some cat owners think it’s perfectly okay for a cat to stick their little paws into your food, while others will immediately ban you from potluck for life. At least the culprit was a hairless sphynx cat, so there won’t be any cat hair in the cheesecake.
Here, the OP was trying to make some sandwich rolls. No doubt they were envisioning fresh, springy bread as the perfect canvas for an amazing sandwich. What they got, however, were dry, hard, and malformed – resembling Jabba The Hutt’s offspring rather than bread rolls.
These were meant to be delicious savory pies with ricotta and spinach filling. But one misstep in the recipe spelled disaster. The ricotta was meant to be smooth and creamy but came out looking like an unappetizing mess because the OP didn’t strain the lumps out.
The creator of these was a bit heavy-handed with the baking powder in the cake dough. Chaos ensued as the cakes rose too much, split, and spilled all over the bottom of the oven. But, look on the bright side, the batter weirdly burned an ‘infinity’ symbol onto the element.
Believe it or not, these flat, weirdly transparent green disks were supposed to be macaroons. However, before we laugh too hard, macaroons are notoriously difficult to make. Kudos to the OP for trying!
Unhappy Christmas Cookies
These cookies were the result of a ‘create your own’ cookie-making kit. All I can say is that that’s
not what was promised on the tin.
This cake was made by the OP for her husband, but it turns out that she accidentally curdled the buttercream when she added lemon to it. Another user had a helpful suggestion: “…you need to conjure up some fake tears and tell your husband that you tripped and tragically dropped the cake and had to throw it away, you promise you’ll bake another one tomorrow.”
“My daughter made this cake last night,” the OP posted on Twitter. “Is she 3?” another user asked. The answer was: “Close. She’s 21.” But what nobody can get over is that the cupcakes piled on top of the larger cake still have the wrappings on.
This cake didn’t actually turn out too badly – it’s solid and seems to be baked correctly. But the frosting definitely needs work. When it wasn’t turning out so great, the OP really steered into the fail. The result is hilarious.
This Baby Yoda cake was ambitious for a novice to attempt in the first place, but at least it probably still tastes great. As Yoda would say: The greatest teacher, failure is.
Don’t Bake After Midnight
This is a classic example of expectations vs. reality. What they wanted was an adorable Gizmo cake. What they got was what looks like a melted gremlin. Maybe they shouldn’t have
baked the cake after midnight?
We have no idea what this was supposed to be, and we won’t ask. Another user summed the description up perfectly: “Thought I had accidentally joined a gardening subreddit and this was a picture of some fresh dirt or something. Oh my goodness.”
Another Air Fryer Disaster
I know that air fryers are the hottest trend right now, but again, you probably shouldn’t try to bake anything in one. Especially not something as complex as a croissant.
Okay, to be fair this mess wasn’t entirely the OP’s fault. Apparently, the tin size in the original recipe had been grossly overestimated. But the baker said it still tasted good, so at least there’s that.
The Perfect Cake for 2020
Now, this cake is the embodiment of the year 2020: it started out with high expectations and everything was looking good. Then, as a finishing touch, the frosting was added. It looked perfect. Until it all came unglued and ruined everything.
For those who don’t know, brigadeiros is a Brazilian dessert made of condensed milk, cocoa powder, butter, and rolled in chocolate sprinkles. This one’s a definite fail.
The baker who made this bundt cake tried to add fresh strawberries into the batter. In theory, it would seem like it would work, right? Wrong. The strawberries became a slimy mess and ruined the entire cake.
Well, this one is just heartbreaking. The cake was perfect and moist, but it got stuck to the pan when the OP tried to turn it out. Even though the OP greased the pan, it stuck and tore into pieces. Better luck next time, OP.
Now, this is an impressive fail. The cake was burned on the outside, but still liquid on the inside – positively defying physics. If you’re going to fail something so hard, you might as well put some effort into it.
This cake is actually truly frightening. The cake’s shape and color aren’t bad, but the baker needs to work on their piping skills. Maybe it could be put to good use scaring the trick-or-treaters away?
This attempt at making a Pokémon cake is not too bad. As one user pointed out: “Perfect! It actually kind of looks like those pixelated images from the early 2000s.” Nailed it.
So these were meant to be scones, but became bread rolls. To be honest, at least they resemble
something. “Honestly I’m not mad, I’m just impressed at how un-scone-ish they look,” the OP commented.
This fail really has me doing a facepalm. And nothing was even supposed to be baking. This guy forgot to turn the oven off before storing his sourdough starter in there. Nooooo.
This baker has been attempting sourdough bread for a while, and this is a huge improvement on the original. At least the OP knows exactly what they did wrong this time.
So, the story behind these monstrosities is that the OP was making chocolate chip cookies, “scooped them on the proverbial parchment paper, and slapped them in the oven and accidentally hit “‘oven clean'” instead of the timer” – and the oven “locked itself up.” Imagine watching all your hard work going up in flames and not being able to do anything about it!
This OP attempted to make monkey bread but left the dough overnight and it rose over the pan and tried to escape. While it may look like a clump of melted marshmallows, at least it still tasted good.
Apparently, this was supposed to be a waffle. I wonder if the OP continued to make them though – everyone knows that the first waffle is always a throw-away.
The ice cream cake in this one actually seems perfectly fine – it’s not easy to make a perfectly round cake. The lettering… well… that’s another story.
These were supposed to be sweet potato biscuits, but they look very unappetizing. As the baker points out, they really do resemble raw Krabby Patties. Nasty.
These chocolate chip cookies are just awful. Other people on the thread felt the need to ask the burning question for us: did they actually
mix the ingredients before baking these?
According to the OP, these cupcakes were perfectly fine. That is until she arrived at a kid’s birthday party and unveiled them. It looks like someone was a little hasty and frosted the cupcakes before they were cooled properly.
This is yet another prime example of “expectations vs. reality.” Honestly, I don’t see how these jello shots inside cupcakes were supposed to work, but this definitely isn’t it.
This OP accidentally left a loaf of challah (braided bread) in the oven overnight. “It was literally too burnt to cut,” the OP added in an update, “we keep it on a shelf in the back of the bakery to use as a weapon in case of a robbery.”
We totally see what the OP was going for here, but this is a far cry from the star-spangled banner. We hope it tastes good though!
After all the work that went into making a starter and kneading the dough, this OP had a moment of clumsiness and dropped the pyrex dish, dough, and all. Our hearts go out to this baker.
We hope you giggled at these baking fails as much as we did, and we hope you don’t feel too bad if you’ve ever experienced any baking mishaps as bad as these. Just remember that the secret is to practice. But if you have ever submitted a baking fail to an online thread, we thank you for the laughs.
