Many dieticians will tell you that the best way to stay healthy (and lose weight in the process!) is to follow a diet that contains healthy fats and very few carbohydrates. In fact, the Atkins, ketogenic (AKA keto), and low-carbohydrate diets all follow this simple rule: drastically reduce your carbohydrate intake and replace it with healthy fats.
So, what’s the science behind a low-carb diet?
Eating fewer carbs and more fat puts the body into a metabolic state called ketosis. This means that your body will become better at burning fat to make energy instead of using carbs, meaning that you’ll be able to lose weight faster.
And there are health benefits to this diet, too.
Because carbs are replaced with fat, the body is no longer dependant on glucose to create energy. This means that your blood sugar and insulin levels will decrease. Studies suggest that, besides rapid weight loss, a low-carb diet can also help health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and epilepsy.
So, if it’s as easy as replacing carbs with fat, why doesn’t everyone follow a low-carb diet?
Many people struggle to keep up a low-carb diet because the meal prep for the week can seem daunting. And, when your meals are not prepped and ready to take with you to the office, school, or when you’re traveling, you’re more likely to be tempted to give in to cravings.
This is where Joe Duff, the “Diet Chef,” steps in.
Joe is committed to a healthy lifestyle, and he helps his followers stick to their meal plans, too.
And with more than 440,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, he must be doing something right!
One of his videos, titled 17 Keto Snacks At WalMart, has garnered over 1,9 million views!
In this wildly popular video, Joe lists 17 items you can buy at your local Walmart that are low-carb and keto-friendly.
As a bonus, Most of the snacks featured in this video have only 2g of net carbs or less, and all of them have less than 4g net carbs in total.
And the best part?
Even if you forget your meal on the way to work (or wherever you’re going) you can just pop into Walmart and pick one of these tasty snacks up without feeling any guilt.
We’ve picked 5 low-carb snacks from Joe’s list for quick reference below – all can be found at Walmart.
Mac’s Pork Skins
These are pork rinds, also called chicharrones. What Joe thinks is awesome about these low-carb snacks is that a large bag will only set you back by $1.78. Even better, they contain zero carbs, and they only contain two ingredients: fried pork skins and salt.
As a bonus, they are super crunchy and delicious!
Quest Protein Chips
Joe loves Quest protein chips, particularly the barbeque flavor. Each bag is only 3g of net carbs, however, they are more on the expensive side. But Joe emphasizes that they are well worth the price because they taste just like barbeque potato chips!
They are salty and flavorsome – what more could you ask for?
Super Snack Time Pizza in a Bag
Joe says that the Pizza in a Bag Pepperoni-flavored jerky is the most interesting low-carb snack he’s come across so far. And “the keto macros are amazing per serving,” with only 2g of net carbs per 28g.
This jerky also contains 10g of fat, 5g of protein, and 110 calories per 28g serving. However, this snack also falls on the more expensive side.
Mauna Loa Maui Onion & Garlic Macadamias
Now, Joe warns that this snack is only for those who can exercise some self-control. They are macadamia nuts flavored with onion and garlic to give them a deliciously savory kick. As a bonus, each serving only contains 2g of net carbs.
These macadamias are also on the expensive side, but again, Joe thinks they are well worth the price.
Babybel Miniture Cheese Wheels
Cheese is a great low-carb, high-fat snack. Joe’s personal favorite cheese snacks are the Babybel mini cheese wheels. Joe loves that these mini cheese wheels are pre-packaged and portioned already, which helps him with portion control.
What’s more, they contain zero carbs. These are also a great option if you’re on a budget because they are not as expensive as some other snacks on Joe’s list.
